Life with Moxie: Spring Must Haves

As the orchids and citrus trees begin to explode in glorious fragrant blossoms, we can’t help but be inspired by the intoxicating signs of spring. There are also the sporty signs of spring with the Masters, spring training and March Madness. In the pop culture realm look to the Oscars, the Grammys, and Spring Break- for those fortunate enough to still be in a dynamic that forces a vacation to be taken.

Here in Florida our spring time is unique. It includes mass shark migration, the inability to secure a decent dinner reservation if not more than 24 hours out, Alligator mating season, music festivals like Tortuga and Ultra, Swallow-tail Kites and breathtakingly beautiful blooming trees like the Royal Poinciana, Golden Rain Tree and Illawarra Flame tree just to name a few.

At Life with Moxie, we have a few favorite things that we are very much looking forward to for spring.

In the world of fashion we’ll see shiny satins, fringe, vibrant colors and dusty pastels. So our key foundation pieces to pull it together will be strappy delicate heels, boyfriend jeans, smaller purses in amazing colors, and printsflorals, plaids- layered.

Unlike fashion trends that come, go and then return like florals in the spring, the food trends are truly moving in a new direction and we are thrilled. There have been several parallel food trends that are all- finally- facing in the direction of healthier, more sustainable and community focused. Meals like classic Sunday dinners at home and Brunch out with friends and family have been notably on the rise.

Gut-friendly foods (and supplements like pro and prebiotics) have finally become part of normal conversation and diet including things like kimchi, miso and kefir. Non-alcoholic drinks as a trend, has become noticed in the industry as millennials are opting out of the alcohol and looking to botanical mixersand tonics for equally creative, yet health-conscious mock-tails.

Culture-themed foods have always had their moments- think Mediterranean diet. This year the trend is looking to the Pacific, with Hawaii and Japan, the Poke bowl is really the star here. Then there is the MexicanPeruvian andBrazilianinfluence. They also focus on the local produce, making them the star of every meal.

Plant-based proteins are on the rise, probably the one trend that we are most excited about. Tofu, tempeh and quinoa are leading the trend as individual ingredients. Then there is the meatless-meat trend that is running parallel and there are some truly amazing companies now leading the change. Impossible burgerGardein and Lightlife are personal favorites. Lastly, 2018 will continue to see an increased focus on hyper-local food. Restaurants, grocery stores and recipes are honoring the trend started by Danish chefRené Redzepiwho is doing just that at his two-Michelin-starred Copenhagen restaurant Noma.

What beauty signatures made the runways, yet are still realistic for being seen in public…? Au Natural with gloss lips and brushed brows. We love this one as it presumes a focus on healthy, dewy skin. If you don’t feel confident to pull this off yet, look to Moxie Creed to get you there. Another nearly nude edition is holographic perspex liner paired with nude glossy lips. The range of lime green through turquoise blues- all mermaid-esque eyeshadow. Barely-there eyes with the focus being red lips. Smokey eyes, based on sandy color range- not the regular black/grey/dark brown, cheek and lip stains and rose gold (yes, it’s out for home design trend this year but you can still cherish it in the beauty realm) for a dusting in eyes, cheeks and lips. Or how about the nearly nude, with highlighter only definition, very fresh and bright, then the inner eye shimmer is the perfect finish.

For hair, 1920’s style waves, messy croissant buns tucked behind the ear, easy, low pony tails, beachy waves, blunt wavy bobs, twisted hair tucks and…. Wait for it… hair accessories- like ponytail ribbons, hair clips and combs.

Spring is in the air, plant something, clean your closet out and get ready… because it’s coming.

It’s spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you’ve got it, you want – oh, you don’t quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!
Mark Twain
